Merrimack 1U & 2U Server Designs
Six system versions, one design language — with as much shared hardware and as little branding real estate as possible.
01 · Context
Three configurations of 1RU and 2RU systems
Part of a new generation of products, this system shipped in three versions each of the 1RU and 2RU chassis, for configurability. The challenge was fitting all six versions to a consistent design language while sharing as many common components as possible — with minimal room left for branding elements.
02 · Indicator exploration
Refining status indicators and rear labeling
I explored several rounds of status indicator options, then refined the rear indicator and labeling layout to work across all six configurations.
03 · From concept to sustaining
Leading the design through two minor and one major upgrade
I led the Industrial Design for this product from initial concepts through sustaining, including two minor and one major upgrade — working directly with engineers in China on cost-cutting and design-for-assembly/manufacturing efforts.
04 · Battery back-up unit
A serviceable battery in a drive-sized footprint
Alongside the larger system design, this project included a new battery back-up unit that needed to fit within an existing hard drive opening and stay easily accessible while the system kept running.
