A completely new system, this 3RU form factor allowed for more design discretion than other systems with eight removable HDDs and large areas left open to allow for cooling.
Leading Industrial Design from first concepts through continued sustaining work, I worked on updates to the product through four more product generations which allowed the main mechanical design to be used for 8 years. Initially the largest challenge was creating a new interface to pull the system from the rack. Working with mechanical engineering and suppliers we were able to create an interface that was both easy-to-use and intuitive, but fit within the larger context of the company's branding.
The memory module ejection was an on-going challenge through numerous generations. The dueling challenges of signal integrity and cost led to a redesign in nearly every generation of the product and I worked with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers and serviceability to come to acceptable solutions, often with additional labeling needed.
I additionally worked closely with human factors engineers to develop all label artwork, including service aids and component identification.
